Vadodara is the third largest city in the Western Indian State of Gujarat, after Ahmedabad and Surat. The city is known for the Lakshmi Vilas Palace, the residence of Baroda State’s Maratha royal family, the Gaekwads. It is also the home of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (Vadodara), the largest university in Gujarat. It was my second visit to this city and this time I was invited to check out the iconic Surya Palace hotel, which is now known as Grand Mercure Vadodara Surya Palace, an ideal choice for travelers seeking upscale accommodation for business and leisure alike. The hotel is 5 min drive from the Railway Station and 10- 15 min drive from the airport.
As soon as I entered the hotel, the fantastic artwork done by Nagji Patel a well-known artist welcomed me. And after seeing the property for a while I realized that wherever you go in the hotel, (lobby, Restaurant, coffee shop, ball room, hotel rooms) you will find the stunning artwork done by artists from Baroda. This all shows how much hotel is connected with the city’s rich cultural heritage.
Hotel is strategically located in close proximity to Vadodara’s business district and corporate hub, the hotel is the first Grand Mercure to launch in the state of Gujarat. It features 146 well-appointed guest rooms, including five suites, a fitness centre and open-air pool.
Rooms are fairly large and clean. Loved the natural light coming into the room, which makes it look more appealing & warm. Same is with the bathroom, normally we see the bathroom placed either on the right or left to the door but here it is in the corner of the room with a windows for natural light to come in. Downside is that the rooms offer no scenic view as the hotel is situated in a street off the main road.
You get a welcome drink and room has a fruit and cookie platter on arrival. Coffee and tea are available in the room as well a mini bar with complimentary bottled water.
Hotel also offers the beautiful swimming pool located at the 1st Floor. If you are a fitness buff, don’t skip your daily exercise routine and flex those muscles at Hotel’s Fitness Centre.
If you are staying with friends don’t forget the visit the small room in the lobby area. The moment I walked in, I saw stunning artwork with cozy sitting area (Coffee Shop). I sat there for a while with a friend and had a cup of coffee … do check out this space!!
The fantastic service with a smile on faces welcomed as I dined at the Azure – their in-house multi cuisine restaurant. Will write about this in my next post
I tried their dinner buffet that offers variety of local food with rich taste. In the breakfast the spread was quite good and live counters for dosa and eggs (my favorite).
Special mention to the Gujarati Thali, where every element on the plate was delicious and bursting with regional flavors … MUST TRY!!
Overall I had a wonderful time staying at Grand Mercure Vadodara Surya Palace. Comfortable and memorable stay J
